Bernie “Boom Boom” Geoffrion, the hockey Hall of Famer credited with inventing the slap shot, died Saturday before his No. 5 jersey was to be retired by the Montreal Canadiens.

Another of the greats from hockey’s golden age is gone, dying the day his number was to be retired. He leaves behind a winning legacy and one of the best nicknames in the sport.
