I failed to reinflate my friend’s balloon (see below) by suggesting she find Die Broke, which was a life-changing read for me. Unlike most self-help books, which are simplistic and repetitive, this one is simple and repetitive, and that makes all the difference. It teaches the basic rules of budgeting and debt-avoidance found in most financial advice columns, but its real genius lies in its titular philosophy. The author explains how to live in the now (a terrible phrase, but it works here) by spending and sharing your wealth in a responsible yet effective way. It changed my perspective on jobs, money and life experiences, and I highly – and continuously – recommend it to everyone I know.
