Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has ordered government and cultural bodies to use modified Persian words to replace foreign words that have crept into the language, such as “pizzas” which will now be known as “elastic loaves,” state media reported Saturday.
Putting the “total” back into “totalitarianism,” Mahmoud Ahmadinejad now wants to control Iran’s language, as well as the people who speak it. Trying to stop the evolution of language is a tough thing to do, but then Quebec and other such insular regions never had the threat of armed enforcement behind their language police. I bet the OLF is lustily taking notes right about now…
