Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and conservationist known as the ‘Crocodile Hunter,’ was killed Monday by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.

This is anything but unexpected, yet I’m still a little saddened to hear of Steve Irwin’s passing. He made a living by putting himself in the path of dangerous animals, but his love of them shone through the stunts. Especially sad is that he leaves behind a young family, including a daughter who is his spitting image. She’s going to have a hard time growing up out of the spotlight.
