My mate Darren Hanlon has a new album out, and it’s brilliant. For those who’ve never heard of him, he’s a witty Aussie singer-songwriter in the vein of Billy Bragg – or, as he says, like the lead singer of the Psychedelic Furs singing Robyn Hitchcock songs. There are a few sample tracks on this page; “Falling Aeroplanes,” “A to Z” and “Elbows” are an excellent primer to his work. He’s also a labelmate of my darling Lucksmiths – is in fact the catalyst to my discovering my fave band – so like them his lyrics command more attention than the average pop release. His latest album, Fingertips and Mountain Tops arrived this morning, with the equally awesome new Luckies EP (also highly recommended) and I was heartily chuffed to discover my name Dazza’s liner notes – a secret nerdy life goal now accomplished! The explanation for his thanks stems from last year, when I had the great pleasure of providing him with a couch on which to crash for a few days. Sadly, the pleasure was all mine, as he was food poisoned at the time, but we had a great time bonding over DVDs and music while he recuperated. The lesson from this Stumble, then, is to be sure to pick up the album, catch him in concert, or nurse him back to health whenever the opportunity presents itself. You won’t regret it!
