YouTube again shows its depth, by dredging up a video I didn’t expect to find. I recorded this performance about 15 years ago (albeit from the CBC, which is mercifully staffed with commentators far less inane than the Americans on this clip) and it has mesmerised me ever since. Gary Beacom was a Canuck figure skater who never won much in the way of medals, but whose interpretative performances always brought the house down. I can’t think of this clip without hearing Brian Wilson’s comments, “you’d swear he had no bones at all!” Worth watching, even if – as I do – you hate figure skating.
