Andrew Anthony talks to Ricky Gervais | Film | The Observer

I’m in a Gervais-a-thon at the moment. LOVE reading Ricky interviews, as there’s always a lot of insights (more so than the silly, ephemeral podcast).

The success of the published scripts have meant that a large section of the country now quotes David Brent in the way that people used to quote Monty Python . But what they cannot mimic is Gervais’s unique range of facial gestures and the way he maximises the comic possibilities of his squat frame.

‘I love physical comedy,’ he says. ‘I love piling on pathos. I love the idea of it just not being a good day.’
