Possible “new” Caravaggio painting discovered, under layers of other artists’ paint. I’m all for more originals coming out of the woodwork, though there’s the usual debate over the authenticity of the work:

But Caravaggio experts said the work Lapucci examined was not of the same quality of a Caravaggio original.

“It does not have his vigor, it does not have his brush work,” Keith Sciberras, art history professor at the University of Malta and a Caravaggio expert. “It does not have the spirit of Caravaggio in it.”

Having recently seen his Annunciation (in Nancy’s fabulous Musee des Beaux Arts – well worth a visit!), my hopes are still high for this being real. Annunciation was one of the flattest, most lifeless Caravaggio works I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen quite a few at this point, but it’s always nice to have more Caravaggios around. And if anyone wants to scrape a couple of Dali paintings to see if there’s a Botticelli lurking underneath, I’d be all for it.
