Being a big Harry Potter fan, I’m all for the excitement that accompanies the release of Deathly Hallows; it’s been a long journey for both JK and her legion of readers. But the hype has reached an uncomfortable fever pitch, and I’m disappointed to see Rowling believing it.
A day after the New York Times reviewed the book, the publisher and author release statements chiding the Times for obtaining a copy of the book and “spoiling” it for readers. (I thought they did a good job of NOT revealing much.) From the stammering noises of outrage emitted by Rowling and Bloomsbury, you’d think jail time would be an acceptable punishment.
Perhaps it’s a good thing that this is the last we’ll see of her for a while – perhaps she can use the proceeds towards a 12-step program for spotlight addiction…
A Bloomsbury spokeswoman called the New York Times review “very sad,” adding that there was only one day to wait until the official release in book stores around the world. Twelve million copies of the book have been printed for the U.S. market alone.
She likened the events in the United States to the Boston Tea Party, a 1773 protest by American colonists against Britain.
