CIRCUS “HIPPO” IS HARNESSED AND TRAINED TO DRAW CART

Someone has created a Modern Mechanix blog, scanning and posting articles of interest – usually in the outmoded-therefore-funny vein.

It’s interesting to see how fascinated people were, even 70 years ago, by such innovations as, “transporting pigs in their own cages!” (instead of filling only the floor of a livestock car) or the “automated chicken coop!” heralding the dawn of battery farming.

Most of the animal-related articles stress innovation (such as it was) and dominance – lots of automated processes and animals trained to do our bidding. Most of the ideas, to our modern pets-as-family eyes, seem cruel or crowing. Though I did get a kick out of this article, wherein a hippo plans a future Darwin Award submission.
