Republican presidential candidate John McCain promised Wednesday to balance the federal budget despite the nation’s deepening economic distress.

Uh, yeah, good luck with that!

Time was, I thought John McCain was an admirable Republican. I don’t know if it’s ambition or age that has changed him, but he seems more and more to have let slip the surly bonds of common sense and touched the face of senility.

The pandering to the crowd with grand promises of balanced budgets and 100-year wars doesn’t jive with his promises to cut income taxes, sales taxes and gas taxes. Though I suppose this inability to grasp even basic economic workings is to be expected of a man who’s had everything handed to him in life, and who has too many houses to keep straight.
