Razzle Dazzle – Dazzle Painting

http://www.gotouring.com/razzledazzle/articles/dazzle.html This website, posted on BoingBoing today, is new to me, but the cubist involvement in the development of camouflage is not. I was lucky enough to stumble upon (literally, in this case) an exhibit of Andr Mare‘s WWI paintings while in Paris a few years ago. Unfortunately, there is no Wikipedia entry for him; […]

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/102205Z.shtml An important critique of the Bush administration and America itself for not doing more in its hollow pledge to “support the troops.” The actions of today’s generation, when viewed through the prism of WWII’s victory gardens and gasoline rationing, are downright gluttonous. You can’t run a war like this without asking for sacrifice. Something’s […]

Cesare Borgia – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cesare_Borgia Fascinating genesis of the modern image of Christ. It seems He was modeled on a Renaissance-era murderer and reprobate. It has been suggested that some pictures of Jesus Christ produced around Borgia’s lifetime were based on Cesare Borgia, and that this in turn has influenced images of Jesus produced since that time.

Reimbursement Program for Troops Stalls – New York Times

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/03/politics/03equip.html I bet every single car in the Pentagon parking lot has a “support the troops” sticker on it: The Pentagon has not completed guidelines for allowing soldiers, their families and charities to be reimbursed for some combat equipment they bought for use in Iraq and Afghanistan, a year after the passage of legislation calling […]

http://www.treatanysoldier.com/CarePackages.cfm Meaningless bumper stickers and red-white-and-blue bunting accomplish nothing. If you really want to support the troops, buy a couple of these and send them to Iraq. I imagine a box of cookies would stir more feelings of home than a low-effort gesture.

Meriwether Lewis – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meriwether_Lewis Wikipedia isn’t nearly as bitchy as Flickr, so I present to you my current crush… (He’s been dead for nearly 200 years, but you can’t have everything) The most refined pioneer America has ever seen – the cool, the “hawt”, the very, very dead Meriwether Lewis!

News – Latest breaking news – Telegraph

http://news.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/07/17/nbang17.xml Why not just have a word with the insurgents? I’m sure they’ll understand. No doubt they’d be sporting enough to call a ceasefire!: “Soldiers are facing the undignified prospect of being forced to shout “bang, bang” on military training exercises after an admission by the Army that it is running out of blank ammunition.”

Skylighters: An Introduction to Antiaircraft Artillery and Searchlights

http://www.skylighters.org/barrageballoons/ Here’s a weapon of war that’s new to me: “The barrage balloon, filled with lighter-than-air gas, was attached to a steel cable that could be raised or lowered using a motorized winch. In forcing enemy planes to higher altitudes, surprise invasions became less likely and bombing accuracy was hampered as well. The balloons restricted […]

Obituary: Shelby Foote | World news | The Guardian

http://www.guardian.co.uk/obituaries/story/0,3604,1518624,00.html Shelby Foote died last week. I’m gutted, but consoling myself by rewatching all 11 hours of the PBS “Civil War” It’s good medicine :): “When asked about the American civil war, Foote resorted to an anecdote. Early in the conflict, he used to say, a squad of Union soldiers closed in on a ragged […]

http://www.photosbysusan.net/MemorialsNight/VietnamVeteransMemorial/ Affecting photos of an affecting monument: “Comprised of three men carrying infantry weapons, the statue grouping has been called both The Three Soldiers and The Three Servicemen. The men are wearing Vietnam War era uniforms and could be from any branch of the U.S. military at that time. Interpretations of the work vary widely. […]
