Many a barbecue and tailgate party was ruined in the pre-pop top days when it was discovered that no one had remembered to bring a church key to the proceedings. The pointy end punctured beer (and soda pop) cans open – one hole for pouring, one for a vent. The rounded end was used to remove bottle caps – twist-off crown caps weren’t invented until the 1960s, and even then it took some years for breweries to start using them on their products. But then again, most veteran party animals of that era knew how to open a beer bottle on a car bumper or table edge in an emergency.

Grieving commentators on the AV Club’s news report pointed to this amazing video for Shadrack as a memorial. The fact that a screechy white-boy rap band could conceive of a video so unusual and artistic should’ve been a good indication than there was a lot going on beneath the group’s surface. I was only a casual listener, but appreciated the turns Yauch’s public life took. Activism, repentance and soul-searching didn’t seem to be on the cards for him when I heard my first illicit Beasties cassette at age 11 in the back of a school bus. Budu Saranai, Adam.

And a follow up “Revenge of the 5th” post, though like most good Star Wars fans, I don’t recognise the prequels.

Sean O’Neal writes the news reports for the AVClub, and he does it very, very well. I find myself reading items for topics that have no interest to me, just to see what kind of pitch-perfect snark he can bring to them. Sadly, I am a huuuuuge Star Wars nerd, so this item was of distinct interest to me, and go figure – Sean nailed it.

A not so long time ago, as recently as January, it seemed that the circle was complete, and that Darth Vader—once but the learner—had become the master of appearing in crime reports that afforded the opportunity to make easy Star Wars jokes. But your eyes can deceive you; dont trust them and so forth: CBS News reports the recent arrest of one Obiwan Kenobi, a name weve not heard in a long, long time because it is the name of a character in a movie and not a real person, except for the guy who legally changed it to that in 1999 to collect a $1,000 reward from a radio station…

Last month I participated in A Musical Emergency, which is a loose collective of theater and music folks in SF that turns popular stories or movies into full length musicals. They divide the story up into bite sized chunks and everyone’s responsible for telling their part of the story however they feel. The movie was Empire Strikes Back. And the scene I chose was the scene where Han saves Luke from Hoth. Sung from the perspective of the Tauntaun. I wrote the first half and adapted the second half from A Little Fall Of Rain from Les Miz. It’s… a little sad. I don’t know about you, but that scene kinda traumatized me. I think it shows.
