TED Talk: Tierney Thys’ Sunfish

This is a prototypical TED Talk: Fun, funny, interesting and informative. The Giant Sunfish is lucky to have someone like Tierney Thys looking out for it.

TED Talk: Franz Lanting’s LIFE

Franz Lanting’s nature photography is married to wonderful text and a Philip Glass soundtrack to create a beautiful glimpse of our world from Big Bang to birth. Replace Lanting’s Dutch “uptalk?” with James Earl Jones or David Attenborough, and this could easily be the next BBC documentary blockbuster.

Mike deGruy: Hooked by an octopus | Video on TED.com

http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/mike_degruy_hooked_by_octopus.html Mike deGruy’s TED talk about octopods and the preservation of our oceans is very engaging. (NB Future marine biologists: having a huge shark bite visible on your arm lends credulity, as well as making you look like a total badass.)

Unexploded Bombs in Laos

http://plainofjars.net/UXO.htm A counterpart to the documentary I just reviewed, containing the very disturbing image of the dead child. It’s “face” is a very personal Australian ex-soldier who works in Laos, training crews on dismantling the unexploded ordinance that has littered the country since the Vietnam War. (I found it both puzzling and […]

Your Choice Tomato SASE! Get Six Varieties for Free.

http://wintersown.org/wseo1/YourChoiceTomatoSASE.html Free tomato seeds for the price of a SASE? What a great idea. To use a rather appalling analogy, tomatoes are the cockroaches of the gardening world. The seeds can be kept in circumstances that counter all seed-keeping logic, they will grow in almost any soil type, and even the worst-tended plant will result […]

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-plastiki21-2010feb21,0,728915.story This is a great combination of angry, active and illustrative protest. Great find, NonZeroSum. Also, “Plastiki”? Brilliant.
