Sita Sings the Blues

Once again I find myself constrained by SU’s lack of “I LOVE IT!” button…

A mention of Hanuman on Saline‘s blog made me want to revisit Nina Paley’s delightful Sita Sings the Blues project.

After a stay in India and a breakup with her husband, she began a modern retelling of the Rama legend, with Sita the doormat recast as Sita the woman wronged, to the accompaniment (genius!) of Annette Hanshaw songs. Everything about this project – character design, animation, soundtrack choices – is fantastic. One of my favourite web discoveries EVER, and worthy of a donation, as Paley’s apparently losing money creating and releasing these!
