An Ongoing Disaster

Fish and crustaceans caught in the Gulf of Mexico are heavily diseased and deformed.  Given the environmental disaster that the region suffered, first in the wake of the interminable oil spill, then again in the cleanup.  How I wish these could be served up, à la Blinky, to BP executives and anybody involved in designing/building/voting [...]

Mr. Condom

I happened upon this TED Talk through the Melinda Gates talk on contraception. Gates was studied and sober, and made her case well, explaining how she was spending some of her billions on family planning. Homemade Homes

These hand-built homes always inspire me. Shame I’m mechanically inept. (I’ve had a friend bar me from ever assembling Ikea furniture without his assistance.) TED Talk: Franz Lanting’s LIFE

Franz Lanting’s nature photography is married to wonderful text and a Philip Glass soundtrack to create a beautiful glimpse of our world from Big Bang to birth. Replace Lanting’s Dutch “uptalk?” with James Earl Jones or David Attenborough, and this could easily be the next BBC documentary blockbuster.

Mike deGruy: Hooked by an octopus | Video on TED.com

http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/mike_degruy_hooked_by_octopus.htmlMike deGruy’s TED talk about octopods and the preservation of our oceans is very engaging. (NB Future marine biologists: having a huge shark bite visible on your arm lends credulity, as well as making you look like a total badass.)
