The manufacturers of Cristal champagne voiced their disappointment that the Gangsta culture chose their product to reflect the essence of “bling.” In response, Jay-Z is calling for a boycott.

“It has come to my attention that the managing director of Cristal, Frederic Rouzaud views the ‘hip-hop’ culture as ‘unwelcome attention,”‘ Jay-Z said in a statement released Wednesday. “I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands including The 40/40 Club nor in my personal life.”

I don’t know that Cristal doesn’t have a point. Remember that a large part of the bling faction tend to take pride (to the point of tattoing themselves with the word) in being thugs. I don’t think it’s racist to say you don’t want jerks using your product.

Secondly, the joke’s on Jay-Z. How many of his lyrics is he going to have to re-jig? (And seeing how poor most of his rhymes were in the first place, he has some sweat ahead of him) But that’s the price you pay for basing your lyrics – as well as your happiness and apparently a large part of your existence – on pimping brand name products.
