Mixed messages from the Benazir Bhutto camp in successive statements. This is always a sign that the situation’s far worse than they want to admit:
1) “She had just crossed the gate when we heard a deafening sound. We could feel its impact but by the grace of God, she is safe,” he said.
2) “BB is serious and she is in the operating theater,” he told The Associated Press. Other top leaders of Bhutto’s party were at the Rawalpindi General Hospital, crying.
If Bhutto’s gone (as CNN is, in fact, reporting), Pakistan’s slide into chaos just accelerated considerably.
