I usually avoid American Idol like the plague (I caught about five minutes during the first season, and that was enough to know that it wasn’t my kind of music), but as everyone’s talking about this year’s runner up, Adam Lambert, I thought I’d check him out. Most of his covers are songs I couldn’t stand in their original form (“Mad World”? Really?) but he does a good job with “Tracks of My Tears”. All the octave-straddling wank is out of the way before the first stanza, and it’s a nice modernization of an old classic.
That said, I’ll take Smokey’s version anyday.
