I’m making my way through the current stock of movie trailers, trying to see if there’s anything worth picking out of the ooze. I tend to do this once every couple of months, and an inadvertent effect of watching them all en masse is that themes start to emerge. One memorable session saw something like 5 trailers which featured a “record scratch” sound effect (Oh look! A wacky twist to a tired cliche!). This round – as yet incomplete – the theme seems to be vigilante justice, as perpetrated by the “hero” or “heroine” when “the system” fails them. Revenge fantasies never sat well with me, especially when the body count racked up by the protagonist is higher than the thugs. Ugh all around.
