There’s a paucity of commentary to accompany these photos, but as the region has become familiar to many of us since 2001, not much is needed. It’s especially notable that, were it not for the headline at the page top, and a reduction in the number of burqas pictured, you’d hardly know these photos are three decades old. Life – and attitudes – in the Middle East appear not to have changed much in the past millennium.
