Darren Hanlon – Elbows (Dir. Natalie van den Dungen)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYOAtZG2X7I So after seven LONG years, I finally got to see my pal Darren Hanlon back up onstage tonight, and as with the first time I saw him, he was fabulous. Just to make things even awesomer (yes, awesomer – deal with it), I got to spend the evening with him and his equally fabulous […]

http://www.geocities.com/pearson22s/index.html Wow! I’m a fan, but this guy is hard core. This website offers a very thorough listing of all Lucksmiths releases and news. If you’ve never experienced the wonder that is the Luckies, do yourself a favour and click through.

—the lost and lonesome recording co—

http://www.lostandlonesome.com.au/ Aussie twee-pop label extraordinaire, Candle Records, has decided to close shop. Luck(smith)ily, my darling boys have solved the Candle-snuffing crisis by starting their own label. A terrific sign of future intentions from the band, but I’d feel more at ease if they’d list themselves among the rest of their talent!

Darren Hanlon live “Hold On”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MItKb5GNePE My mate Daz keeps an audience spellbound using only his voice, a ukelele and some terrific lyrical wordplay. It’s now nearly 7 years since I was part of his transfixed audience, and I must say, I’m getting damned impatient for his next Toronto appearance. **EDIT** SU has added its usual dose of surreality by […]

the Lucksmiths

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnK0T0M-d9I Last Luckies video of the day – I promise (mainly because there’s slim pickings on YouTube!) This is an interesting one, though, showcasing the entire band (except for Louis, but he’s relatively new anyway) in a great venue, with a song (“Great Lengths”) whose “punchline” only revealed itself to me when seen live. It’s […]

the Lucksmiths – The Golden Age Of Aviation (Pop Dakar 2006)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSEXGr-ULv4 My favourite song by my favourite band, performed live with their usual terrific understatedness? I’ll need a moment, please. *hand over fluttering heart* The rest of you, go enjoy the Lucksmiths’ “Golden Age of Aviation”. NOW. The vid kicks in a few seconds after the first punch-line is set up, and is a bit-Tali […]

Darren Hanlon – The Unmade Bed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-HEWb0eeRw An unexpected video to one of my pal Darren’s songs (one of my favourites). He shows up in a dark suit near the end to dance far better than I would have expected. He cleans up quite nicely (also unexpected!) For what it’s worth, my favourite line of the song occurs early: Our guest […]

Discography

http://www.darrenhanlon.com/index.cfm?go=html.discography My mate Darren Hanlon has a new album out, and it’s brilliant. For those who’ve never heard of him, he’s a witty Aussie singer-songwriter in the vein of Billy Bragg – or, as he says, like the lead singer of the Psychedelic Furs singing Robyn Hitchcock songs. There are a few sample tracks on […]
